Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) affects many children, especially this time of year. Signs of allergies include sneezing, stuffiness, runny nose and itchiness in the nose, the roof of the mouth, throat, eyes or ears. The most common causes of these symptoms are pollen and mold spores in the air, which start a chain reaction in the immune system. Pollen are tiny cells needed to fertilize plants. They are spread by the wind and weather conditions can affect the amount of pollen in the air at any time. The entire pollen season generally lasts from February or March through October. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is often caused by tree pollen in the early spring. During the late spring and early summer, grasses may cause symptoms. Weeds are the cause of late summer and fall hay fever. Molds are tiny fungi which are spread by spores in the air. They are found almost anywhere, including soil, plants and rotting wood. Outdoor mold spores begin to increase in spring and peak in July in warmer states and October in colder states. Individuals react differently from exposure and symptoms are affected by recent contact with other allergens, the amount of pollen exposure and their sensitivity to pollen and mold. Symptoms are often less prominent on rainy, cloudy or windless days because movement of pollen is limited. How can you limit your child’s exposure to pollen or mold?
Speak to your physician regarding medications, both over the counter and prescription. If your child has unrelieved or severe symptoms, speak to your physician about a referral to an allergist. Thank you to Dundee staff who became CPR/AED trained this school year. It is a team effort to be prepared for emergencies at school. Their dedication is very much appreciated. Staff members include: Liz Vokal, Bob Naujokaitis, Erin Bunton, Maureen Larson, Ashleigh Kimberling, Raquel Caldwell, Alissa Anderson, Elisabeth Zulkosky, Deb Counter, Sara Tingelhoff, Shannon Roeder and Kaye Goetzinger. Today was the biennial Talent Show at Dundee Elementary! There were 45 amazing acts taking place over 90 minutes. Wowzers!
Acts ranged from karate, singing and dancing, joke-telling, and let's not forget the minions! A special thanks goes to Mrs. Novak for organizing the show, and to her helpers, Mrs. Anderson, Miss Manire and Ms. Cook. Congratulations to them and all the performers on their success. If you have some photos to share, we'd love to use them in the Dispatch! Please upload them here. It's super easy, just drag and drop -- no need to create an account or password! Thanks in advance for your help! While Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week isn't until March 30-April 3, we're making plans and arrangements NOW so when the week comes, we can show the staff how much we truly appreciate all they do.
How can you help? Show some love by giving $1, $2, $5, $10 or even $20. ANY AMOUNT IS APPRECIATED! You should have received an envelope and note in the last Wednesday folder, but if it has vanished from your desk, any envelope will do. Simply place your donation in an envelope and write 'Sarah Middleton, PTO Staff Appreciation' on the front. We'd also like to have notes of thanks to give the teachers, so please feel free to send in your note for the week of March 30-April 3. With the generous donations in years past, we have had the ability to do some really great things: buy each staff member a Dundee t-shirt, stock the staff lounge with K-Cups, Clorox wipes, and more. We have big plans for this year already, including meals (thanks to generous donations from local restaurants!). While it is NEVER too late to donate and show the love, if the donations could be received by this Wednesday, March 4th, we'll be able to better plan and budget what to do for our amazing teachers and staff. Thank you in advance for your support, and we look forward to sharing with you the end results of your generosity.
