Year End Info Regarding Medications at School

Getting Medications Back Home for Summer

OPS policy does not allow us to send home medications with elementary students at the end of the school year.

Unless your child is attending summer school, a parent or designated adult needs to pick up their medication on the last day of school (Friday, May 22).  Medications not picked up by the following Wednesday, May 27, are to be disposed of.

Medication and Treatment Orders for Next Year (2015-16 School Year)

Students who are on daily and as needed medications, such as asthma inhalers, will receive an envelope with forms needed for the next school year.  Please schedule your physician appointments now to ensure that your child will have the medication needed during the school day next year.

All medications, including anything across the counter, require written physician orders and written parent authorization.  Medications supplied need to be in the properly labeled prescription bottle or in the original container.

You may drop off the medications and forms on Back to School Night (on Monday, August 10, 2015), but we should have them no later than the first day of the school year.

If you have any questions, please give me a call at (402) 554-8424.

Sun Safety Tips for Kids

Children enjoy playing outdoors, exploring nature, and feeling the sun’s warmth. It also helps produce Vitamin D.

But too much sun can be dangerous. To help protect children, help them develop sun safe habits early in life.

• Limit time in the midday sun, especially between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M.

• Seek shade whenever possible. If you can’t see your shadow, get out of the sun! Beware of cloudy days; 80% of the sun’s rays penetrate clouds.

• Always Use Sunscreen. Apply a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 or higher wherever your skin is showing. Reapply every 2 hours when working or playing outdoors. Even waterproof sunscreen can come off when sweating, toweling off, or if you are in the water for extended periods of time. Don’t use sunscreen on infants under 6 months of age.

• Wear a hat. Use one with a 3 inch brim that covers the face, ears, and back of neck. Baseball caps aren’t sun safe.

• Cover up. Wearing tightly woven, loose-fitting, and full-length clothing is a good way to protect your skin from UV rays.

• Wear sunglasses that block 99-100% of UV Radiation.

Parents, be good role models. Modeling healthy sun behavior is the best way to develop sun safe behaviors in your children.

Enjoy the summer -- safely in the sun!

You heard it here, folks!

To stock up for summer reading, visit the BOGO Book Fair in the library on May 6th - 8th.  The Primary Grades Music Program will be on May 7th, so this will be a convenient time to stop by.

So bring your kiddos and make sure you don't hear a single 'I'm bored!' all summer long!
