SCHOOL CHOICE FOR THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR

10/29/2014

The Student Assignment Plan for the 2015-16 school year supports the direction of the Douglas-Sarpy County Learning Community, as well as the priorities of the OPS Board of Education — every school should reflect the socioeconomic diversity of our greater community.

Under the Student Assignment Plan:
  • Elementary students may attend the Home Attendance Area (neighborhood) school assigned by residential address.  To find your HAA, click here.
  • Current OPS students now in grades KG—5 may continue to attend their current schools (with limited exceptions).
  • Families may apply for their child to attend any OPS school.  Approval of a request depends on the availability of space at the student’s grade level in the school and these priorities:
  1. The first priority for approval is for a student whose sibling now attends and will continue to attend the requested school.  Approval requires available space in the student’s grade level at the school and is not guaranteed.
  2. The next priority will be given to a student whose socioeconomic background will enhance the diversity of the requested school.
  3. A student who will not enhance the socioeconomic diversity of a school may be approved if space is available.
  • Parents of Kindergarten-eligible children who now attend Pre-K or Head Start programs that are not located in their child’s neighborhood school may apply for the child to attend the same school or another non-neighborhood school.  Approval is based on the stipulations shown above and is not guaranteed.

Transportation:

Transportation provisions included in the Student Assignment Plan are designed to support the goal of increasing socioeconomic diversity in every school and to assist families whose children attend the neighborhood elementary school but live more than 1.5 miles from the school.

SCHOOL CHOICE APPLICATIONS will be distributed at school in January, 2015, to:
  • All incoming Kindergarten children now enrolled in Head Start or Pre-K
  • Children in the last grade level of their school (GR 4, 5, or 6)

Families of children currently in other grades (KG-5) will receive a postcard by mail in December.  Those wishing to participate in School Choice may return the postcard by December 12 to receive a School Choice Application in January.

Generic School Choice Applications also will be available at every school and in the Student Placement office at the TAC Building (at 3215 Cuming Street) during the month of January.

More information can be found here.

MIDDLE SCHOOL RECRUITMENT LETTERS will be mailed in December to families of students currently in the last grade level of their elementary school.  The letter includes information about middle schools and their respective Open House dates.

Children may attend the neighborhood middle school or parents may apply for their child to attend a middle school through School Choice.  Approval of requests occurs as described for elementary schools.

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UPS will be held in January, 2015.  Please attend Round-Up at your home attendance area school based on your residential address.  School Choice Applications will be available at Round-Up and throughout the month of January for families who wish to request a non-neighborhood school(s).

Round-Up dates will be publicized, or check the date with your neighborhood school.

SCHOOL SELECTION occurs by lottery.  Results are mailed to parents by April 1, 2015.

If you have questions about the Omaha Public Schools Student Assignment Plan or School Choice, please contact the Student Placement Office at 557-2710.

www.ops.org --> Schools --> Find My School.

Dodge Street Underpass - Omaha's Subway - Needs Renovation

10/21/2014

Did you see the news coverage regarding the renovation of the Dundee Subway?

Yes, Dundee does have a subway (also known as a pedestrian tunnel).  The subway was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.  It is the last remaining pedestrian tunnel in Omaha.

The primary reason for the subway was to provide a safe way for school children to cross Dodge Street.

As the tunnel reaches 80 years old, it is in need of renovation.  The project, led by the Dundee Memorial Park Association, will do the following:

· Install brighter, longer lasting, energy efficient LED lighting
· Install new historic signage
· Install skid-resistant coating on the ramps
· Make minor concrete and masonry repairs
· Install a mural designed by Dundee School students inside the tunnel

Leo A. Daly Co. has generously provided in-kind design work to get the project started.  The City of Omaha has committed $1,000 from a federal anti-graffiti grant for the mural.

The overall project is estimated to cost $30,000.

This is where we NEED your financial support.  Dundee-Memorial Park has always been willing to come together to financially support projects that better our neighborhood like the flower baskets, the Dundee Clock and the Streetcar Monument.

There are two ways you can donate:

1. Online at http://www.dundee-memorialpark.org/donate.

2. Write a check payable to Dundee-Memorial Park Association and mail to:
Dave Schinzel
319 South 50th Avenue
Omaha, NE  68132

All donations of $250 or more will be recognized on a special plaque in the tunnel.

Dundee-Memorial Park Association is a recognized 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization.  Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Please visit  www.Dundee-MemorialPark.org or Contact Dave Schinzel at drschinzel@hotmail.com or 402-551-3742 for more information.

We are part of a great community.  That spirit of community, however, comes from the very people in it.

The Dundee Dispatch is starting a new feature, This Dundee Life.

If you know of a family that exemplifies the qualities that make our neighborhood great, nominate them to be featured.  This is a chance to showcase just a few of the people we are proud to call our own.

We all know there are benefits to having an active lifestyle and incorporating activity whenever you can.  Taking some time to walk your child to school benefits not only your health, but also contributes to the neighborhood and community by lessening the amount of traffic on our roads.

To celebrate, on Wednesday, October 8 from 8:40 to 9:05am, we will be celebrating the day with doughnuts, bananas, coffee, orange juice and milk.  Stations for getting the bonus breakfast treats will be on the north and south sides of the school.

Come celebrate with us!

Just a reminder that Tuesday, October 7th is individual school picture day.

All students will be photographed whether or not they order photos.  The photographers will start at 9:15 and finish around noon.

Order forms went home in the Wednesday Folder on Oct. 1.  Pictures must be paid for in advance, and change will not be made available.  Checks should be made out to Scholastic Photography.  You may also pay online.

So, shine that hair and polish those pearly whites -- we'll take care of the paparazzi.

Hopefully you were able to schedule a Conference time to meet with your child's teacher during the great turnout we had at Back to School Night.  (Better yet, hopefully you were able to get them scheduled back to back!)

Parent/Teacher Conferences are an important, yet long night for the Dundee staff.

The PTO has a tradition of offering a little something to make the night more... palatable.

We provide food, drinks and desserts for the teachers and staff.  Here's how you can help!
