Those facts were among many presented at last night's PTO meeting by Omaha Public Schools expert Alana Schriver. She talked about many of the different refugee groups that have settled in Omaha and who attend Omaha Public Schools. She addressed some of the struggles the refugees have when coming into the school system and some of the hurdles OPS has to clear in providing the refugees the services they need.
Ms. Schriver recommended watching this video, produced by the International Rescue Committee to get a glimpse of one family's journey from a refugee camp to life in the United States.
- The average family lives in a refugee camp for 15-20 years before being resettled.
- Most refugees first hope is to go back to their home country.
- Less than 1% of refugees will make it to the US through the resettlement process.
